Ben,
Have you had a look at the National Geospatial Data Framework
(NGDF) web site http://www.ngdf.org.uk - in particular, the United
Kingdom Standard Geographic Base at: http://www.ngdf.org.uk/uksgb/
This gives well-structured summary tables of the various geographic
units in common usage. It currently includes administrative and
postal geographies, although it will be expanded. There is a summary
table of the core spatial units, from which you can get the metadata
description and also a table of data products (eg. Postcode Address
File), showing which core spatial units which they relate to, their
coverage and supplier.
It is also worth checking the Edina (http://edina.ed.ac.uk ) and
Midas (http://mimas.ac.uk) web sites for further information and to
see whether the data you need are available from these sources (they
are not listed in the contact details given by the UKSGB site, which
refers only to the original supplier).
Regards,
Nina
