(Apology for duplicate mailing)
Dear friends,
We organized a special session for the coming AGU meeting, December 13-17,
1999, San Francisco, California. Presentations of field, experimental and
modeling results are welcomed,
Ze'ev Reches and Yehuda Ben-Zion
Special session:
DYNAMIC FRACTURING OF ROCKS AND ROCK-LIKE MATERIALS
(Tectonophysics session T15, Joint with Seismology)
Rock fracturing in the crust is frequently unstable, displaying fast
growth velocities during earthquakes, impacts and rockbursts. This session
is devoted to descriptions and analyses of unstable, dynamic fracturing of
rocks and other brittle materials. Participants are encouraged to present
works on dynamic processes associated with tensile fracturing (joints and
dikes) and shear fracturing (faults and shear zones). Advances in this
subject could provide tools for deducing growth velocity from properties
of faults and joints in the field, and would lead to a better
understanding of the mechanics of dynamic fracturing.
