Data mining: puff or potential?
Data mining is the secondary analysis of large databases aimed at
finding
unsuspected relationships which are of interest or value to the
database
owner. It is interdisciplinary, using ideas from statistics, machine
learning, and database technology. While it has promise, it poses
challenges, some involving deep statistical issues. These are
discussed and
examples are given from my own work.
