We have tried to obviate this problem a Middlesex by using one of our
terminal rooms (on each of out 6 campus) as an "Exam Centre" for the
duration of the exam periods.
This room is (where possible) next to the main office of the Computer
centre so there is a techie nearby to help should thing go pear
shaped! If a student is using special software (HAL, ZoomText etc)
these have to be loaded the day prior to the exam on one of the
networked machines (drive "C"). So far :-))) no probs!
Where we have scribes, we put up to 4 in a terminal room with
free standing screens between them and again, no problems with this
system so far.
Where a student is using voice recognition, " Via Voice etc", then a
separate small room with a PC is set up, the student has to save
his/her profile on disk and bring it in together with the software
(if it is not part of the universities suite!) at least a week prior
to the exam. This sounds OK but as we have 6 main campus the
logistics do not always mesh!
So far we have not been in the position where the student has had to
use their own computer.
The idea of reserving a terminal room as an "exam centre" though
seems to have been accepted by the powers without too much fuss and
is now getting embedded.
Hope that this helps
Alan.

Has anyone had experience of checking a student's computer
for use in examinations. We have a student who will need to
use voice input and HAL for an examination but we don't
have compatible software in the University. He will
therefore need to bring in his own laptop or bring in the
relevant software to load onto one of the machines in the
faculty.
Potentially the student could hide a file anywhere, as a
.dll file for example, then find it in the exam.
I seem to remember a conversation about this not long ago on
dis-forum. Could someone point me in the right direction?
