The Home Office has recently issued a consultation
paper entitled 'Interception of Communications in
the United Kingdom'. This document is available in
pdf form on the web at
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/oicd/ioc.htm
Responses are due back by Friday 13th August.
UKERNA will be studying these proposals in relation to its
own services, but is also prepared to produce a
more general statement on behalf of the
academic community.
The main thrust is a fairly general extension
into all communications services (not just those
of the PTOs as at present) which would include
MANs and LANs as well as JANET itself, and
courier services as well as Post Office services.
As far as IP is concerned, an immediate concern is
the possible requirement on operators to design into their
networks the means to allow the interception agencies
to acquire the information they want (under warrant,
of course.
