(apologies for multiple deliveries of this message)
Below you find the CfP for a full day workshop at ECSCW'99.
We received requests for extending the deadline and therefore set a new
date on 28 June!

---- EVOLVING USE OF GROUPWARE ----
-- a full day workshop at ECSCW'99 --
- Copenhagen, 12 September -

More often than not, users appear to use groupware different from how
the groupware designers intended. In particular, the organisation of
their work and their working practices change over time as they
're-invent' the technology or even develop novel uses. Groupware should
be able to meet the changing but essentially unpredictable needs of
groups - but how? And how may groups be helped to develop adequate
working patterns or novel applications with flexible groupware?
Understanding the processes of evolution of groupware use is a first
step toward answering these questions.
In this workshop we aim to work on a shared conceptual framework that
will help us to better understand the evolution of groupware use, with
the long-term aim to improve groupware design, introduction and use.
We will together apply existing conceptual frameworks to long-term case
studies.
The choice of theories as well as the selection of case studies will be
based on the expertise and input of the participants. Relevant theories
are, among others: Activity Theory, Structuration Theory, Adaptive
Structuration Theory.
The following case studies are examples of those that can be discussed
at the workshop. They are based on the research of the organisers and
are long-term studies of groups using groupware:
(1) Use of BSCW in a research team: A large group of distributed
researchers has used several years the BSCW system (a document
management and sharing system, accessible over the Internet) in relation
with several other communication tools.
(2) POLITeam in the State Representative Body: After the introduction
of the groupware application POLITeam, considerable changes in the
cooperative work practice were observed in the State Representative
Body.
(3) Videoconferencing for medical teleconsultations: A group of
physicians has been followed since April 1998, when they first started
to use videoconferencing as a medium for consulting remote experts, as a
replacement of face-to-face meetings.
Participants should have a definite interest in understanding the
dynamics of groupware use. Preferably, they should have knowledge about
one or more relevant theories and have carried out research concerning
evolving groupware use. Participants are requested to write a position
paper (approx. 1000 words) in which the above interest and knowledge is
expressed. Extended deadline is 28 June 1999.
