** CONFERENCE SCOPE AND STRUCTURE
ICSE is the flagship annual conference of the software engineering
community. It brings together researchers, educators, professionals,
managers, and students to identify the new directions of research,
assess the evolution of practice, and exchange new ideas.
ICSE 2000 will offer a wide range of opportunities for participation
to all the members of the community by providing tutorials, workshops,
and a main program consisting of sessions on technical papers, keynote
plenary presentations, panels, invited state-of-the-art presentations,
research and teaching demonstrations, posters and informal research
demos.
The conference is organized around the following main tracks:
* Technical papers and panels
Technical papers should describe innovative and significant work in
the research and practice of software engineering and software
engineering education. Papers are collected in an archival, refereed
conference proceedings, published by the ACM press, whose literature
is read and cited by researchers and practitioners
worldwide. Submissions of proposals for panels on a technical
subject of topical interest are also strongly encouraged.
For more information see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/techpaperspanels.html
* Practical experience and technology transfer
ICSE 2000 goes beyond being the major conference for research in
software engineering by providing a forum for examining issues
raised by the transfer of software engineering technology from
research to industry, or from one industrial application to another.
Both papers and panels on this topic will be presented as part of
the main conference program.
For more information on how to submit a paper or panel proposal
related to this topic see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/practice.html
* State of the art reports
Leading scientists will be invited to provide state of the art reports
on the main areas of software engineering. This will give a unique
opportunity to ICSE participants to get a comprehensive view of the
main achievements and the open problems left to the research agenda of
the new millennium.
* Software Engineering Education and Training
ICSE 2000 will provide a dedicated track for bringing together
software engineering educators, trainers and students, in a forum
that will encourage discussion, presentation and demonstration of
novel tools and methods for software engineering education and
training. The track will run throughout the ICSE 2000 week and will
comprise a number of coordinated events, for which contributions are
solicited. The organized events are outlined below.
* Doctoral symposium
This small, one-day symposium is a forum for graduate students to
present and discuss their dissertation research objectives,
approaches, and preliminary results.
For more information on how to submit see:
http://www-dse.doc.ic.ac.uk/~jnm/doctoral.html
* Education panels
This sub-track will comprise a series of panels to discuss current
open issues in software engineering education and training.
For more information on how to submit panel proposals see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/softeng.html#edupanel
* Education and training technical papers
ICSE 2000 welcomes submissions of papers describing novel research
in software engineering education and training. Submissions will
be reviewed by the conference program committee, and accepted
papers will be presented during research paper sessions at the
conference. Submissions should be marked as 'SEAT' contributions,
but should be submitted directly to the program co-chairs, like
other technical papers. Accepted papers will also be published in
the conference proceedings.
For more information see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/softeng.html#edutraining
* Teaching demonstrations
This sub-track seeks demonstrations of innovative approaches
supporting new forms of software engineering teaching and
learning. Contributions may include demonstrations of innovative
systems, methodologies or approaches, or presentations of
exemplary cases.
For more information on topics of interest and how to submit see:
http://www.cs.uni-essen.de/Fachgebiete/SoftTech/CFPs/SEAT_TD/
* Research demonstration and posters
This track deals with demonstrations of existing systems and
research prototypes and with presentations of on-going work. It is
organized in three main streams: formal research demonstrations,
research exhibition, and posters.
For more information on how to contribute to this track see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/rdemosposters.html
* Tutorials
The ICSE 2000 tutorial program will be selected by a committee from
among submitted proposals, possibly including some proposals that
are solicited by the committee.
For more information on how to submit a tutorial proposal see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/tutorials.html
* Workshops
Workshops are held either before or after the conference and may be
one, one and a half, or two days in length. Workshops are not
alternative forums for full papers which otherwise could be
submitted to ICSE. Workshop proposals will be reviewed by a
committee.
For more information on how to submit a workshop proposal see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/workshops.html
** COLLOCATED EVENTS
If you are interested in collocating an independent conference or
workshop at Limerick, following the main program, contact Mehdi
Jazayeri ([log in to unmask]) for information. Local
arrangements will be handled by the ICSE 2000 organization.
** INVITED SPEAKERS
GRADY BOOCH
Worldwide renown for his pioneering work on object-oriented methods
and is one of the creators of UML.
MANUEL CASTELLS
Professor of sociology and planning at the University of California,
Berkeley, and author of the acclaimed trilogy on "The Information Age:
Economy, Society & Culture".
CHRIS HORN
Founder and CEO of Iona Technologies, PLC, a world leader in CORBA
compliant middleware.
AXEL VAN LAMSWEERDE
Professor of computer science at Universite' catholique de Louvain,
Belgium, Editor-in-Chief of ACM TOSEM, and a leading researcher in
software engineering.
** VENUE
Ireland will welcome you at any time of the year but June may be the
ideal time to visit. Days are long, the sun sets after 10pm, the
tourist season is just starting and the weather - statistically - is
at its best.
Limerick is the gateway to Ireland's scenic west. An ancient city,
with a charter predating that of London, Limerick epitomises Ireland's
industrial and cultural renaissance.
The University of Limerick has played a major part in Ireland and
Limerick's rebirth. Set on a magnificent parkland campus, beside the
Shannon, the University is the centrepiece of the National
Technological Park. The conference venue is the university Foundation
Building which houses research groups, faculty offices, lecture
theatres, display areas and a 1,000 seat concert hall.
For more information on the conference venue see:
http://www.ul.ie/~icse2000/venue.html
