The original poster mentioned F90 code. INQUIRE (and IIRC, these came in with
F90) has specifiers READ and READWRITE. EXISTS does leave this an open
question, but I would assume (though I've never used them) that READ and
READWRITE should give better answers than using OPEN and testing the value of
the IOSTAT variable.

Either "\'" or "\s" (to escape the apostrophe) seems to work for most people,
but that little whizz-bang apostrophe gives me little spam.
