To the bugs list,
I have uncovered what appears to be a bug in classic bugs. Running the
two line program
model pois;
var x, lambda;
{
lambda <- 745;
x ~ dpois(lambda);
}
to generate a Poisson variate with mean 745 works fine, but changing the
Poisson mean to any value 746 or larger creates an error message. If no
initial values are supplied, the error occurs at the compilation step
where initial values are generated. If an inits file is included, the
compilation is completed without error, but update(1) returns an error
message after a very long pause.
This bug seems to be present in classic bugs running in both DOS and SUN
(SPARC) OS, but does NOT seem to be present in WinBUGS, where
arbitrarily large Poisson means seem to work fine.
