<http://www.crossroads-conference.org/> 'Third International Crossroads
in Cultural Studies Conference: 21 - 25 June 2000, Birmingham, UK'
There are many panels, including for example:
'Towards an 'Open' University: The Changing Face of British Academia
1926-1970'
This panel aims to stimulate discussion about the role of the British
university in society between 1926 (the establishment of
Reading University, the only 'new' university of the inter-war period)
and 1970 (the establishment of the Open University).
Areas for discussion might include: The role of technological change in
facilitating more effective learning/teaching; The
extent of the university's independence and its role as government
agency; The inclusion of minority/marginalised groups and
regional mobility of students within the university; Changes in
university curricula to reflect the changing needs of employers
and university-industry interaction; The image of the university in
popular culture/fiction.
This panel aims at developing dialogue between such diverse fields as
education studies, sociology, history, political
science, literature, and philosophy. It is hoped that the
interdisciplinary nature of the panel will enrich thinking on education
across the spectrum of academic fields, and give pointers to future
educational development in the light of new information
technologies, the restructuring of government spending on education and
the political alteration of the nation-state, the
traditional unit within which the university network has operated.
