Coleridge Summer Conference 2000
Cannington College, Somerset - 20-26 July 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Coleridge Summer Conference, first held in 1988, is one of the most
convivial and academically stimulating occasions on the Romantic
calendar. Organised by the Friends of Coleridge (Registered Charity No.
295285), the Conference is held in the picturesque Somerset village of
Cannington, near Coleridge's Cottage at Nether Stowey. The Conference
presents an exciting programme of lectures and papers, plus walks,
excursions, and heart-warming evenings at local taverns. The Conference
takes place in the Somerset College of Agriculture, a modern campus
which also comprises the elegant early eighteenth-century buildings and
gardens of a former nunnery beside the village church.
The pastoral landscape of Somerset with 'Sea, and hill, and
wood' retains the tranquillity which attracted Coleridge and his friends
two hundred years ago. We will visit Coleridge Cottage in 'beloved
STOWEY', and walk the heights and 'roaring dells' of the Quantock Hills
which inspired Coleridge's great poetry. The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner, Fears in Solitude, Frost at Midnight and This Lime-Tree Bower
were among the poems Coleridge composed while at Stowey. At nearby
Alfoxden House Dorothy Wordsworth wrote her first journal, celebrating
Quantock landscape and life, and her brother William wrote many poems
which were published in Lyrical Ballads.
Speakers at STC 2000 will include John Beer, Kelvin Everest, David
Fairer, Reg Foakes, Tim Fulford, Anthony Harding, Tom Mayberry, Raimonda
Modiano, Seamus Perry, Anya Taylor, Nicola Trott, with more to be
announced. The Conference will visit the eighteenth-century landscaped
gardens at Hestercombe, and the traditional walk from Cannington to
Stowey will introduce participants to some attractive byways in this
corner of England.
Call for Papers: Papers on all aspects of Coleridge are welcomed, and
you are warmly invited to submit an abstract of your paper for
consideration. A millennial theme might be appropriate, although not a
requirement for intending participants. Conference papers will be twenty
minutes in length; they will be grouped according to subject matter, and
time will be allowed for discussion. As a courtesy to
fellow-participants, all speakers will wish to adhere to the twenty
minute time limit. Please indicate whether you will require a slide or
overhead projector. If you have a critical date for funding it is most
important that you specify this when submitting your abstract. Your
abstract must be very close to 300 words in length, and submitted by
e-mail to the Academic Director, Nicholas Roe, at [log in to unmask] by 1
March 2000. All abstracts will be copied to Graham Davidson, Conference
Secretary, and to Peter Larkin who represents the Friends of Coleridge.
Letters of acceptance will be mailed on 1 April 2000 at the latest, but
we are willing to send letters of provisional acceptance (which will not
be binding on the organisers) to those who have to meet funding
deadlines. As soon as your paper is accepted, you must confirm your
participation by registering for the Conference: see details of
registration below. If you do not register promptly, you may lose the
chance of a place should the Conference be fully booked in the interim.
Abstracts of papers that are accepted will be reproduced as submitted in
the Conference brochure.
Registration: The residential fee includes accommodation in a single or
twin room, full catering, Conference events, and transport from/to
Bridgwater station if requested (details of trains to be met will appear
in the Conference brochure). Resident participants will arrive for the
Conference opening on Thursday 20 July, and depart after lunch on
Wednesday 26 July 2000. The non-residential fee (see below) includes all
Conference events, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and supper.
Postgraduates and those without adequate funds may apply to the
Conference Secretary for a reduced rate. Registration inquiries should
be e-mailed to Graham Davidson at [log in to unmask] and
registration forms and fees should be posted to him at the address given
on the form below. Acknowledgement of fees received will be by e-mail;
receipts will be issued at the Conference.
