Subject: Archival sources in the UK?
Dear all,
I am in the early stages of research for my dissertation on
professionalization of general practice and the Poor Law Medical Service,
and am having some difficulty finding sources in one critical area. I am
interested in the activities of a group called the Poor Law Medical Reform
Association, which existed in England some time between the late 1830s and
the 1870s, though it may even stretch beyond these dates. As you can see,
I have even had difficulty determining when it was formed and how long it
survived! I hope to find some sort of paper trail on this group, but the
best I have been able to do is reconstruct their activities from reports in
various medical journals.
I have searched the National Registry of Archives in the UK, and have
worked through the Humanities collections at the British Library (although
I may have missed materials held in the Science and Technology division).
I also consulted the staff at the Wellcome Institute. I am running out of
ideas--are there other ways to find these sorts of corporate records?
Could a private group's papers have made their way into the PRO, for
example? Any advice on creative ways to find British archival sources from
the US would be greatly appreciated!
I am cross-posting this request to Victoria.
[I am x-posting it to archives-nra: DP]
Thank you,
