A small gold ingot (narrow gold rod about 5cm long - based on seeing
it on the local news!) was found on the Norwich Millennium Library
site recently. I am spotdating the pottery from the site and have
found some small fragments of crucible with small pieces of gold
still adhering, which apparently come from a pit in the vicinity of
the ingot find. Other crucible fragments and copper alloy slag have
turned up in the same pit/well, which is actually medieval, so the
finds are probably residual and of Late Saxon date. An
Anglo-Scandinavian origin has been suggested for the ingot, and the
rest of the metalworking debris may prove to be of the same date,
suggesting a small area of metalworking on the site. This is
preliminary, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the
excavators, Norfolk Archaeological Unit.
