SCHOOL OF COMPUTING, ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

         LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES/COMPUTING

         Ref.no. CETL73

Applications are invited for a post at the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level
tenable from 1st January 2000 (or another date by mutual agreement). The
vacancy has arisen because of the retirement of a senior lecturer in statistics
but it is likely that the person appointed will be asked to do some teaching in
computing or in other areas of the mathematical sciences, as well as statistics.

Applicants should have strong research records in any area of statistics,
computing or operational research. Some areas of interest which would be
particularly welcome are listed below.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by Professor Peter Smith, Director of School,
tel. 0191 515 2761 or email [log in to unmask]

Application letters and cvs, quoting the reference number, may be submitted to

Personnel Department,
University of Sunderland,
Langham Tower,
Ryhope Road,
Sunderland.

Closing data 14th October 1999.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The School of Computing, Engineering and Technology is one of the largest
Schools within the University and embraces the disciplines of Engineering,
Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences. Computing and Mathematical Sciences
activities are located at the University's St.Peter's Campus on the Riverside,
next to the National Glass Centre and a short distance from the sea front.
Computing facilities are excellent with a large network of Sun Workstations and
IBM-compatible machines, as well as Apple Macs. The St.Peter's Library of the
University is only a few yards away.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to research and teaching
activities in statistics, and, if required, teaching in other related areas, and
to collaborate more widely in the activities of the School.

Candidates should have a strong research record in any area of statistics,
computing or operational research but an interest in one of the following areas
may be particularly welcome.

Bayesian inference.
Bayes linear methods.
Computational statistics.
Time series and forecasting.
Applications of statistics, probability and, particularly, Bayesian inference in
computer science (e.g. Bayesian networks).
Applications in other disciplines, including inter-disciplinary collaboration.
Operational research.
Econometrics.
Image processing.

Current research in statistics at the University of Sunderland is largely in
Bayesian statistics, particularly Bayes linear methods. There are also extensive
collaborations with members of other disciplines within the University, e.g. the
Northumbrian Water Ecology Centre, and outside the University, e.g. City of
Sunderland Hospitals, and strong links with industry, e.g. through the Teaching
Company Scheme. Collaboration with the large Computer Science group, in
particular the Centre for Adaptive Systems, is an important feature for
development. There is also a strong interest in operational research and
econometrics among other mathematical science staff in the School. Although the
statistics group at Sunderland is currently small, statistics staff are able to
enjoy frequent contact with members of the strong statistics groups at
neighbouring universities in North East England. There are currently six
statistics research students within the department and several research students
in computer science whose projects include a statistical aspect. In addition we
have a post-doctoral research assistant working on sales forecasting under an
ESPRIT funded project. At the last Research Assessment, Bayesian inference
research at Sunderland was included in the Computer Science submission which was
awarded the grade of 3A. It is hoped to develop statistics research with the
eventual aim of a separate submission.

Teaching at undergraduate level currently includes service teaching to a variety
of disciplines, teaching of Joint Honours Mathematics students and teaching on
our B.A. Accounting and Mathematics degree course. At postgraduate level we
offer a M.Sc. course in Decision Support Systems. Statistical support is also
provided for research students in other disciplines. The successful candidate
may be asked to contribute to the wider teaching of the School, for example in
introductory computing courses.
