Postdoctoral researcher at Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS)
Statistical aspects of QTL mapping in tetraploid potato
BioSS currently has a two-year post for a postdoctoral researcher at the
Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) in Dundee to work on statistical
aspects of QTL mapping in tetraploid potato. The appointment is funded by
the BBSRC and will be made at band 6, with a starting salary of up to
œ19,000. The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of one or more of
the following areas: statistics, quantitative genetics, Fortran programming.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent postgraduate experience) in a
relevant subject. The successful candidate would start research as soon as
possible, and no later than 1st September 1999.
SCRI employs over 200 scientists involved in plant science research aimed
at improving crop quality and utilisation. It is the lead UK centre for potato
research and is strong in plant breeding and quantitative genetics. The
BioSS unit at SCRI is led by Mr Jim McNicol and consists of four
statisticians, who provide research and consultancy in statistics and
biomathematics for the SCRI scientific staff. The statisticians work closely
with BioSS staff at other sites and are involved in BioSS training courses and
a number of collaborative programmes. There are also good links with SCRI
computing staff who run a network of Sun SPARC workstations and support
more than 150 networked PCs throughout the Institute. Links with
universities and other academic/professional groups of statisticians are
strongly encouraged, particularly within the EU. Both BioSS and SCRI have
expanding programmes of postgraduate training.
