STATISTICIANS AND STATISTICAL METHODOLOGISTS
(Newport, South Wales)
The Office for National Statistics plays a key role in compiling, analysing
and disseminating a wide range of information on society, population,
health, the labour market, business and the economy. Our Newport office is
set in a very pleasant working and living environment, with ready access to
a range of excellent cultural, recreational and residential facilities.
The ONS is taking forward a new programme of work to expand and improve the
quality of economic statistics and a number of opportunities for people with
strong statistical and organisational skills have opened up at our office in
South Wales. You could play a key role in reviewing current methods,
designing and implementing new systems or you could take direct
responsibility for producing key statistics about the UK economy. You would
manage projects right through, establishing the requirements to the
production of final outputs, employing and adapting modern statistical
techniques to maximise quality and efficiency.
There are two types of posts available. They may be permanent or fixed term
with the possibility of extension/permanency:
Statisticians (starting salary between £27k and £35k)
The Business Statistics Group conducts all of the business surveys within
ONS. The surveys inform macro-economic, industrial and fiscal policy and
have a wide range of customers both inside and outside government. We
publish a number of high profile monthly series: e.g. the Index of
Production, the Producer Price Index and the Retail Sales Index.
For these posts, you would assume responsibility for a major economic
series, managing the process of producing regular statistics and planning
and implementing developmental work.
Statistical Methodologists (starting salary between £18k and £30k)
The Methods and Quality Division, co-located with the Business Statistics
Group in South Wales, provides crucial methodological support for business
surveys. You would play a pivotal role in reviewing current methods,
researching alternatives (including those of other countries) and devising
practical solutions. You will work in a small highly professional team of
specialists, sharing new ideas and approaches with strong links with
academic and research organisations.
The precise requirements for the posts vary but you will need to
* Excellent statistical skills, including at least a 2:1 degree in
statistics or in economics or other closely-related subject with strong
* Significant experience in analysing statistics and presenting statistical
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
* Knowledge of statistical computing software, including ideally SAS.
For Statistician posts, good management skills will be essential. For the
Methodologist posts, a deeper knowledge of statistics will be expected, and
a post-graduate qualification may be an advantage.
