Synopsis of talk:
The relationship between archaeology and statistics has been a long one,
going back at least to the 1940's, but also an uneasy one. It has oscillated
from zeal in the face of antagonism in the 1960's, through optimism and
over-confidence in the 1970's, to feelings of pessimism and irrelevance in
the 1990's. How did this relationship develop, why is it in its current
state, and what might be done about it?
