Lecturer in Statistics

Applications are invited for the above position, to start on 1 October 1999.

The appointment will be on the Lecturer grade A scale £16,655-^Ö21,815 per
annum.

FURTHER  PARTICULARS

The Department of Mathematics

Mathematics at York is contained in a single department embracing both
pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and statistics. In
October 1999 there will be 18 full-time permanent members of staff, a
Professor of Statistics in a joint appointm ent with the Department of
Economics, and 8 post-doctoral research staff. The degree courses in
Mathematics are a three-year BA/BSc and a four-year MMath in Mathematics,
and combined degrees in Mathematics with Computer Science, Economics,
Education, Ling uistics, Philosophy and Physics. At present there are 355
undergraduate students (full-time equivalent: 296); their average A-level
grades on entry amounted to 25 points (= ABB/BBB). Teaching is mainly by
means of lectures, with small-group tutorials or seminars supporting each
course. Each student is assigned a supervisor who is responsible for
overseeing the student's academic progress and general welfare; each
member of staff has about 16 supervisees. A normal teaching load includes
three or four cours es of 18 lectures each, as well as tutorials, seminars
and project supervision, per 30-week year. New lecturers will not be
expected to take up the full lecturing load in their first year.  The
quality of teaching of the department was assessed by the QAA in October
1998, and was awarded 22 points out of 24. It obtained the maximum grade
of 4 in four of the six aspects of the review (Teaching, Learning and
Assessment; Student Progression and Achievement; Student Support and
Guidance; and Learning Resources) with a grade of 3 in the other two
(Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation, and Quality Management and
Enhancement). The department's teaching is the responsibility of the Board
of Studies, which consists of all teaching members of staff together with
student representatives.


Statistics at York

The statisticians in the Department of Mathematics are:  

Professor Karim Abadir, MA (Cairo), DPhil (Oxford) (Joint with Economics)
Research interests: Special functions, time series, distribution theory,
semi/non-parametric models, mathematical finance, econometric modelling. 

Dr Peter Lee, BSc (Liverpool), MA, PhD (Cambridge), CStat
	Research interests: Bayesian statistics, probability theory.

John Bibby (multivariate analysis) is an Honorary Fellow and Bill Waugh
(probability theory) is an Honorary Professor. A specialist seminar series
in Statistics started a couple of years ago, and visitors have included
Sir David Cox, Valerie Isham, John K ent, Samuel Kotz, Wojtek Krzanowski,
John Nelder, Peter Robinson, Michael Stephens.  There is a strong link
between statisticians at the Mathematics Department and those at the
Department of Health Sciences and the Department of Economics and Related
Studies. The latter has one of the largest groups of Econometricians (over 10)
in the UK, with main specialisation in Theoretical Econometrics such
as time series, inference, nonlinear models, nonparametric estimation,
qualitative variates, financial econometrics and stochastic processes. In
the 1996 HEFCE research assessment Economics and Econometrics obtained a
rating of 5A. 

Research in Mathematics

The fact that pure mathematics, applied mathematics and theoretical
physics, and statistics are combined at York in a single department means
that there is considerable interaction between staff with different
mathematical backgrounds, in all three areas, and work is done which
straddles conventional subject boundaries. The areas of research most
related to statistics are dynamical systems (with applications to time
series) and traffic theory. Other areas of research in the department are
analytic number theory, functional analysis, differential geometry,
semigroup theory, representation theory, quantum groups, quantum
mechanics, quantum field theory and applied analysis.  In the 1996 HEFCE
research assessment Pure Mathematics obtained a rating of 4, Applied
Mathematics 3a. 

The University of York

The University of York was founded in 1963 and is situated on an
attractive campus on the boundary of the city, within easy reach of the
historic (and very beautiful) city centre. The city has a population of
about 100,000 and supports an active cultural life, including one of the
country's oldest-established repertory theatres and an adventurous musical
programme based on the university. The university has a small presence in
the centre of the city (Eighteenth Century and Medieval Studies), but is
otherw ise united on the campus. A Science Park associated with the
university is situated adjacently.  The university has a total of 4000
undergraduate and 1000 postgraduate students; this is planned to expand to
a total of 6000 as soon as possible. It is a strongly research-oriented
institution, with all departments rated at 3 or above in the 1996 HEFCE 
research assessment, and all but four rated at 4, 5 or 5*. At the same
time, the university is highly successful in its commitment to excellence
in teaching, and ranks second in the country (after Cambridge) in its
teaching quality assessment grades. The a dministrative structure is flat,
with no faculties or other units higher than the academic departments. The
decision-making bodies are the General Academic Board, whose members are
elected from all academic and academic-related staff, and the Professorial
Board.
