Job Title: Statistician
Unit: Research Office, PGME
Location: 8 Beech Hill Road, Royal Hallamshire Hospital,
Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2JF
2. JOB PURPOSE
To provide advice, support and training to CSUH investigators to enhance the
statistics expertise of researchers thereby improving the opportunity to win
research contracts, to deliver high quality research and to publish in well
respected journals.
3. DIMENSIONS
The Statistician will be part of the Research Office team responsible for
delivering a co-ordinated service Trust-wide. The statistician will be
responsible to the Director of Research and the Research Manager and liaise
with the Chairmen of the Research Training Committee and the Research
Management Committee.
The current annual research income from the NHS to the Trust is A33.1m. In
addition grant value from other sources e.g. industry, Research Councils and
Medical Charities, is approximately =A310m.

5. ROLE OF YOUR DEPARTMENT
The Research Office has both academic and managerial roles, with the post of
the Statistician relating to the former.
The academic role focuses on enhancing the expertise of investigators in all
areas of applied research, as well as providing training and supervision for
professional staff with research potential.
The Research team is also responsible for stimulating, selecting,
co-ordinating, supporting and monitoring research at the project and
programme level.
These functions serve to extend and enhance the research profile of the
Trust thereby enabling it to fulfil its NHS Culyer requirements. In addition
the office supports activities which attract commercial, NHS / Regional
Research Council and Medical Charity funding in the highly competitive
national arena.
6. KEY RESULT AREAS
i) Take a lead role in identifying the needs of directorates and
professions so as to develop and deliver services to meet the wide ranging
requirements of researchers.
ii) Advise individual investigators to enable them to design trials, to
undertake high level analysis and interpretation of data, to review and
write protocols and papers.
iii) Design, deliver and evaluate teaching modules / courses to enhance
the expertise of investigators with levels of statistical knowledge ranging
from basic to the advanced.
iv) To develop a range of self-tuition modules in statistics including
the use of computerised statistics packages.
v) Take primary responsibility for evaluating the statistics packages
and reference materials held in the Research Office and Health Sciences
library to ensure all such teaching and reference stock is high quality,
state of the art.
vi) Develop joint strategies with other members of the academic Research
team to provide an effective co-ordinated service for researchers.
vii) Collaborate with the Research Office team and chairmen of relevant
research committees in order to review and evaluate current systems in
accordance with NHS Culyer requirements.
7. JOB REQUIREMENTS
i) Good degree in statistics / mathematics.
ii) Experience in the development and provision of workshops and
courses. Teaching qualification desirable.
iii) Good knowledge of health services research.
iv) Experience of working on health research projects.
v) Ability to relate effectively with clinical and administrative
staff.
vi) Knowledge of the NHS and University sector desirable.
8. COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Statistician will review current needs and provision, develop a strategy
and implement and review it in conjunction with and under the supervision of
the Research Manager. The Statistician will consult actively with the
Research team to develop and review the programme and will liaise with the
chairmen of the Research Training and the Research Management Committees.
The Statistician will work with directorate Research Leads in the delivery
of programmes, and directly with investigators on individual projects.
Secretarial needs will be met by the Administrator and her/his staff.
9. MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB
To identify needs and develop, deliver and evaluate a programme to meet the
performance measures specified in the Trust's Culyer portfolio submission,
within a three year period.
