Research fellow: social capital, place and health (two-year
fixed-term contract)
The appointee will work on a project to
investigate links between social capital, place and health, directed
by John Mohan, Kelvyn Jones and Liz Twigg. We will be constructing
indicators of social capital at a small-area scale using national
survey datasets and other information about the extent of
participation in various forms of altruistic and civic activity. We
will then conduct ecological analyses of the links between these
indicators and area-based morbidity and mortality statistics, and
multi-level analyses of the links between these indicators and
individual characteristics for individuals drawn from national
surveys (such as the Health and Lifestyle surveys).
For this post, we are seeking someone with the appropriate modelling
skills and also experience in managing geographically-referenced data
(some of our datasets are postcoded and will be aggregated at a
variety of spatial scales). A background in geographical information
systems might therefore be helpful though not absolutely essential. We
are looking for candidates who have postgraduate qualifications in
relevant disciplines such as geography, epidemiology, or statistics,
ideally at PhD level though we will consider well-qualified applicants
with masters' degrees and relevant research experience.
Informal inquiries to John Mohan on 01705-842493 or email
