CASE Studentship: Multivariate Applications in Petrochemical
Manufacturing
This EPSRC CASE studentship will be available from October
1999 at Exeter University under the supervision of Professor
W J Krzanowski and Dr T C Bailey, for students who satisfy
the normal EPSRC academic and residential criteria.
CASE studentships are worth approximately 3,000 pounds more
than standard research council studentships. The student
will be primarily based in the School of Mathematical Sciences
at the University of Exeter, but with visits to and possibly
stays for short periods at the collaborating organisation.
The project is in collaboration with Dr Philip Jonathan of
Shell Statistical Services at Thornton, Cheshire. The objective
is to develop statistical methods for characterisation and
prediction using multivariate, auto-correlated data, and to
demonstrate the usefulness of the methods in application to
industrial process data. It is anticipated that the research will
involve a blend of multivariate and spatial/temporal techniques
of statistical analysis, in particular the development of novel
methods of deriving spatial or temporal factors or components.
There may also be scope for investigating the application of
wavelet methods to process control.
Preliminary enquiries are welcomed from potential applicants.
Appropriate qualifications are either a first or upper-second
class honours degree in Mathematics or a related subject, providing
that there has been a substantial statistical content in the
programme, or a first or upper-second class honours degree in
other subjects followed by postgraduate qualification in Statistics.
For further details contact either Professor Krzanowski (01392-264476;

of Exeter, Laver Building, Exeter EX4 4QE.
