The CWI research theme Signals and Images, in collaboration with
Utrecht University, has a vacancy for a PhD position within the
project
INFERENCE FOR RANDOM SETS
sponsored by the Dutch organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
The purpose of this project is to study likelihood based inference
for Gibbsian random set models. More precisely, the behaviour of the
maximum likelihood estimator will be examined and its efficiency
compared to that of various ad hoc approaches. In order to solve
the optimisation problem, efficient and exact Markov chain Monte
Carlo algorithms have to be developed.
Applicants should have a degree in mathematics. Candidates with
degrees in physics, computer science, econometrics or engineering
with a sufficient background in mathematics may also apply. The
position is for four years, preferably commencing Autumn 1999.
