MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL INSTITUTE OF HEARING RESEARCH,
NOTTINGHAM
Statisticians/Epidemiologists - Two posts:
one for 3 years, one for 1 year
The Institute is seeking to appoint two applied statisticians (or data
analysts, epidemiologists, or quantitative psychologists) to work on a
number of studies, including a clinical trial, a longitudinal study of
hearing and a study of hearing changes in young people. It is the
premier organisation for hearing research in the UK and its senior
scientists have a high level of sophistication in study design and
statistics.
The appointees will have the opportunity to model large datasets in
epidemiology and to use methodologies appropriate for longitudinal
studies. The 3-year post may involve some work with signal analysis of
time series, i.e. analysing recordings of the ear's response to sound.
The 1-year post involves chiefly analyses of the national randomised
controlled trial of surgical treatment of children with glue ear, plus
related issues in epidemiology and health economics, including
quality-of-life outcome measures.
Experience using statistical packages (eg GLIM, Genstat, MLn, Splus,
SPSS, P-STAT) to model data would be desirable. The first post is
available for 3 years and will be on the MRC salary scale, Band 4.
Starting salaries are under negotiation but are currently not less than
£16,143 for an MSc and £17,714 for a PhD, according to qualifications
and experience. Applications from current MSc students are welcome.
