Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Statistics
Department of Veterinary Clinical Science and Animal Husbandry

Applications are invited for the above-named post which has arisen in
conjunction with the development of a new interdisciplinary research Unit,
funded by MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) and based at the
Veterinary Field Station in the Wirral. The post is associated with a
specific five-year project, the main aim of which is to evaluate and reduce
the risk to the human population from pathogenic bacteria present on dairy and
beef farms (particularly E coli O157). The appointee would be part of a team
comprising Veterinary scientists, Biologists, Mathematicians and
Statisticians.
Tenable initially for three years, the appointee would play a key role in
implementing the Statistical arm of the project which involves three phases:
(i) development of novel sampling protocols for observational studies; (ii)
parameter estimation for stochastic models using Markov chain Monte Carlo
methods; (iii) Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) modelling of foodborne
infections.
Applicants must have, or will shortly obtain, a PhD in Statistics or Applied
Probability. Knowledge of any or all of the following areas would be
advantageous but not essential: re-sampling methods, MCMC, QRA methodology,
Bayesian Statistics, computer programming.
