Try Modern Applied Statistics with S-plus, Venables & Ripley. For more details
see <http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/MASS2> . This is also a good reference for
the freely available S-like language called R, see for example
<http://stat.ethz.ch/R/>.
You need to start by realizing that S and R are programming languages, not
"standard packages."
