CHAIR IN STATISTICS
The Open University invites applications for a Chair in Statistics.
This post provides an opportunity to lead a Department with an impressive
research and teaching record. The Department has built up an excellent
position to attract internal and external funding for research, with strong
Faculty encouragement; it gained a grade 4 in the 1996 RAE. It teaches more
students statistics than any other UK University, and also has access to
considerable multi-media resources to ensure that its courses are at the
forefront of current teaching technologies.
The vacancy has arisen from the appointment of the current postholder,
Professor David Hand, to a Chair at Imperial College.
You should have an excellent record of research publication, in any area of
Statistics, and of teaching at a range of levels. You will be expected to
concentrate initially on strengthening the Department's position for the
forthcoming Research Assessment Exercise and Subject Review. You will also
be expected to lead the research and teaching developments in the
Department, normally to act as Head of Department, and to contribute to
policy-making at Faculty level.
Salary will be in the professorial range minimum £35,170 according to
academic attainment and experience.
The post is based in Milton Keynes. Informal enquiries may be made of Dr
Kevin McConway, current Head of the Statistics Department (Tel:
01908-653676; email: [log in to unmask]) or Professor David Brannan,
Dean of the Faculty (Tel: 01908-652892; email: [log in to unmask]).
Further particulars of the post and the application process may be obtained
from Ms E Ostrowski (Department of Statistics, The Open University, Walton
Hall, Milton Keynes, Bucks MK7 6AA; Tel: 01908-653844; email:

The closing date for applications is 16th April 1999. Shortlisted candidates
will be invited to visit the Department between 17th and 28th May, and
interviews will be held on 8th June.
Disabled applicants whose skills and experience meet the requirements of the
job will be interviewed. Please let us know if you need your copy of the
