According to Henry's Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods
(19th Ed., pp. 472-3):
". . .and exudate should meet one or more of the following criteria: (1)
Pleural fluid/serum protein ratio greater than 0.5; (2) Pleural fluid/serum
LD ratio greater than 0.6; and (3) Pleural fluid LD greater than two-thirds
of the serum upper limit of normal (usually >200 U/mL). Sensitivity is 98%
and specificity is 77% for exudates"
