Recently we had a 53 year old man admitted to the emergency dpt. with
unusual blood gas values. He had become unwell at the football field
(don't know if his club was losing) and was hyperventilating, which
resulted in a beautiful respiratory alkalosis (with partial
compensation):
pH 7.72 (7.35-7.45)
pO2 133 (>65)
pCO2 12 (32-47)
HCO3 16 (21-27)
Sat 100 (94-99)
BE -4 (-3 +3)
He was given some valium and reassured and sent home after some time.
Further clinical details unknown.
I wanted to share this case with you because I had not realized how
high a pH could get with hyperventilation. I called the doctor
because I was a bit worried about the high pH, but apparently they
did not call him back. Any comment welcomed.
Friendly greetings
