>From Peter Barker, University of Reading
I have had a couple of messages from people who are unable to convert the
call for papers that I sent as an attached document this morning, so I am
now sending it as a normal message.
THE CENTRE FOR EAST GERMAN STUDIES
The University of Reading
Conference on the GDR and its history
Rückblick und Revision: Die DDR im Spiegel der Enquête-Kommission
17/18 September 1999
Call for Papers
The Centre is planning a two-day conference on 17 and 18 September 1999 on
'Geschichtsaufarbeitung' and the GDR to mark the tenth anniversary of the
'Wende'. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung will
be supporting the participation of a number of speakers from Germany who
have been involved in the Enquête-Kommission. Suggested speakers include
Markus Meckel, Professor Hermann Weber, and Gerd Poppe. Professor Mary
Fulbrook from University College London will give the keynote paper on
'Geschichtsaufarbeitung' and the history of the GDR.
There is room on the programme for two or three more papers from UK
participants. The main focus of the conference will be on the work of the
Enquête-Kommission of the Bundestag, but papers on other aspects of
'Geschichtsaufarbeitung' in relation to the GDR will be considered.
Topics on which papers are already planned are:
Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald and the territorialisation of memory;
The PDS and its SED past.
Papers can be given in either English or German. Proposals (1-2 pages)
should be sent to me by 31 January 1999.
