APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING.
Consultants in Communicable Disease Control - and their deputies in the
public health department - are often the "Proper Officer" to the local
authorities for a variety of purposes, including the 1948 National
Assitance Act. As part of this role, they may be involved in the process of
obtaining a court under, under Section 47 of the Act, for the compulsory
removal of a person from his or her home, into hospital or residental
accommodation.
This is a very serious process, and the Act is somewhat byzantine and
confusing. I have therefore arranged a study day on this subject.
The study day will take place on Tuesday, February 23rd l999. We hope to
start around 10.00 with two speakers, break for a buffet lunch and then
have a session run by a national expert on public health law - Jim Button
of the Public Health Legal Information Unit.
The venue has not yet been confirmed but will be in Surrey, most probably
in the Epsom area. The cost for the course is £70 per head.
We need to have an idea of numbers as soon as possible to assist us in our
further arrangements:places may be limited, and people booking late might
find that no further places are available.
