I use NUDIST as a reference manager. The advantage is that I could import
masses of references from documents produced over the years in
differing inconsistent formats without having
to key them into a reference manager (like Papyrus or endnote). The
disadvantage is that I can't export them in a variety of formats, the way
that a proper reference manager can. Whenever I get a new reference I type
it (or more recenlty scan it) into my database and at the same time place
keywords, representing my 'coding scheme' for the contents of the
reference. I then use the automatic search procedure in NUDIST to index
the keywords as nodes. When someone comes to me and says please write an
article on X, or what references do you have on X, I can then search the
database. I have written about this in a chapter on CAQDAS, to appear in a
book otherwise written by David Silverman, on how to do research, which
will come out next summer (Sage).
