Dear Friend,
Pruse Shaw's translation of the *Monarchia* has the facing Latin text
in the 1995 Cambridge University Press edition, ISBN 0 521 48272 0.
Richard Kay's monumental volume's ISBN is: 0082 5328; 131 (Pontifical
Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Studies and Texts 131). I would always consult
the Foster and Boyde classic "Rime": Kenelm Foster and Patrick Boyde, *Dante's
Lyric Poetry*. Oxford: Clarendon Press. 2 vols. 1967. I agree with Otfried:
the Durling-Martinez *Inferno* is a godsend for students!
The Epistles. For a translation, I would still turn to
Dantis Alagherii *Epistolae*/ *The Letters of Dante*, ed. and transl. Paget
Toynbee. Oxford University Press, 1966 (second edition, with bibliographical
appendix by Colin Hardie). Otherwise, only the English translation of the
letters in: Dante, *Monarchy and Three Political Letters*, with an
Introduction by Donald Nicholl and a Note by Colin Hardie. Westport, Conn.:
Hyperion Press, 1979 (reprint of the 1947 edition by The Noonday Press, New
York).
A happy Christmas to all -
John Scott
