Call for Papers - Second E-Mail Circular
With apologies for multiple listings, we would like to invite all
Precambrian Geologists concerned with the tectonics of Archean and
Proterozoic crust to consider participating in the following symposium.
Precambrian Terrane Boundaries, a Symposium in Honour of Jack Henderson
Dates: May 26 - 28 1999
Location: Geological Association of Canada - Mineralogical Association of
Canada Joint Annual Meeting, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
Organisers: A. R. Cruden (University of Toronto) and M. Easton (Ontario
Geological Survey)
Sponsors: GAC Structural Geology and Tectonics Division and GAC Precambrian
Division.
Description: The concept of terrane amalgamation has been applied at all
scales in Precambrian orogens. The tectonic evolution of many Proterozoic
mobile belts is interpreted in terms of collisions between older Archean
blocks. The Archean continental crust is itself interpreted as a collection
of smaller units with distinct lithological and geochronological
characteristics. Fundamental to the application of the terrane concept in
the Precambrian is the recognition and kinematic interpretation of terrane
boundaries. We invite papers on all aspects of the nature of Archean and
Proterozoic terrane boundaries, from the scale of individual terrane
bounding deformation zones to that of the architecture of Precambrian
orogens. Emphasis will be placed on how interpretations of the timing and
kinematics of deformation associated with these boundaries, associated
sedimentary basins and igneous activity are used to construct models of
Precambrian orogenic processes. Of particular interest is how well the
terrane concept holds up to the scrutiny of detailed observations when
applied to the Precambrian.
The symposium will involve both oral and poster presentations.
Field Trip: Transects across the Grenville Front near Sudbury, Ontario.
Leaders: A. Davidson, R.M. Easton, R.S. James, & E. Murphy.
Several other symposia, theme sessions and field trips dealing with a wide
range of topics in Precambrian Geology and ore deposits are also being
offered at the meeting. Details can be found at:
www.laurentian.ca/www/geology/gacmac99.htm
Abstract Submission Deadline: January 15 1999.
The preferred method for abstract submission is via the Sudbury 1999 Web
Site. Details can be found at: www.laurentian.ca/www/geology/gacmac99.htm
Special Publication: We have approached Precambrian Research about
publishing a collection of papers arising from the symposium in a Special
Issue. In order to speed up negotiations we need to establish a preliminary
list of authors and titles. If you are interested in contributing to this
special publication, then please e-mail a title and author list to one of us
asap.
