MEMORY: THE VOICE OF THE SURVIVORS
(MEMORIA: I Sopravvissuti Raccontano) dubbed in English
Tuesday, November 24, 1998
The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia
University will present the first extensive documentary narrated by the
voices of those Italian Jews who survived the Nazi extermination camps.
Inspired by Liliana Picciotto Fargion's The Book of Memory, this film is
the production of The Center for Contemporary Jewish Studies, Radio
Televisione Italiana, and Forma International. The interviews with
these survivors were conducted by historians Liliana Picciotto Fargion
and Marcello Pezzetti in the actual places of their recollections
(Jewish neighborhoods, police stations, trains, Italian and German
Camps).
This documentary records the tragic impact of the racial law (1938) on
Italian society. By going back from Rome, Milan, Bologna, Genoa, and
Florence to Auschwitz and Birkenau, each of the ninety people who
offered their testimony brings to the table of history a courageous
message for succeeding generations.
6:00 p.m.A 45 minute panel discussion on the Holocaust in Italy will be
followed by the preview of the film.
Moderator:
Prof. Richard Brilliant, Director, The Italian Academy
Guest Speakers:
