Dear Maike,
A PhD is a doctor of philosophy, and in Australia, anyone with an
appropriate hounors or Masters degree can apply to any Australian
University to become a Doctoral Candidate. It is also possible to 'roll
over' a research based Masters degree into a PhD. Whether your PhD is a
PT PhD will depend on your undergraduate qualification and your reaearch
topic.
In australia there is an increasing number of professional doctorates
available to health professionals, eg. A Doctorate of Nirsing, A
Docorate of Public Health. These are course work base doctorates with a
theseis component. I am unaware of a professional PT doctorate.
There are a number of PTs with PhDs in Australia, most working in
educational facilities, but a senior clinical physio at our hospital was
recently awarded her PhD.
I hope that this is of help. You should look at some of the University
web sites for more info.
