MacBeth certainly claimed the crown of Scotland as <Tanist>, in his case as
husband of an eligible female. The Pictish mode of royal inheritance may
have been tanistry too. As far as I recall, all the near male relatives
might claim inheritance by that mode (remember that kingship was largely by
election in many lands at that time), and near male relatives could include
husbands of royal females. I am not an authority on this, but there must be
someone in the Group that has this at their fingertips.
It is fascinating just how many systems of inheritance there were - in many
countries they co-existed, which is why so many men could produce some sort
of claim to a throne.
