I have to agree with Alex. Why reinvent the wheel over and over again?
There are products already out there which can not just index metadata
OR full text but actually "mix" the two.
Yes, Search97 might cost tens of thousands of dollars but have you
ever looked at development costs for databases not to mention
maintenance of the the code?
Here another two search engines which can do both full text and metadata
indexing/ searching:
1) Infoseek's Ultraseek server: very easy to use but a real
nightmare on your bank account especially if you are looking at indexing
a lot of documents.

2) Swish-e: It's free and it's fairly simple to get it working. Don't
expect the same functionality you will get from something like
Ultraseek or Verity's Search 97.

Also, another comment regarding Verity's product. It's a real nightmare
to administrate Search97 despite what some people will try to tell you.
On the other hand you will get a software package that should cover
most peoples needs and is customizable to the n'th degree.
