Subject: research study on disability in Sri lanka
Dear Friend,
Before we come to the subject, hope it is appropriate to give you a brief
description.
Having seen that we are disabled persons in the bottom of the society and
attitudinal barriers are forfeited our rights to a full life. We determined
to improve our self-image, self-esteem and cultivate self-reliance in us to
be independent as useful to the society. The result was founding this
organization in 1983. It is today a non-profit making, non-governmental
approved charity.
Our Activities.
1. Identification, prevention and cure of disabilities.
2. Facilitating/encouraging children with disabilities for school
Education.
3. Training in appropriate vocations and creating employment.
4. Improving community awareness on disability and importance of
Integrating the persons with disabilities.
Our Objectives
1. To encourage persons interested to organize as groups for the common
Development of disabled.
2. To encourage groups of disabled and help them in every possible ways
To Make voice of there, own at National level.
3. To introduce the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) as the best
Possible and effective (cost wise too) method for rural through regional
Level organizations.
4. Making available training facilities to help implementers of CBR in
Every Possible way to render a better service to the community.
On a random survey conducted by us, it was revealed that the disabled
population is 6.4% and 87.6% of them had no attention for their meaningful
development. We have also realized that the social integration is more
effective and we started a pilot project to integrate disabled in
respective communities. The out come is successful.
Though there are government and non-governmental institutions implementing
several programs for the disabled persons, there is no continuance outcome.
Majority of programs is unsuccessful and temporary. As we have concentrated
on this waste of energy, resources, valuable time Which is not counting for
development, we decided to start a Research and Development Section (RDS)
under the Central Council of disabled persons (CCDP).
We have discussed the matter, requested equipment from United Nations
Voluntary Fund on Disability, and applied through our Government up to a
limit of US $20,000. Presently look for an avenue for operational funds.
Our object is to be strengthening the CCDP with sufficient resources and
information relevant to the field of Rehabilitation while acting as a
National Resource & Information Center (NRIC) for meaningful OUTPUT.
Expected studies are listed below.
1. How effective the Current Rehabilitation programs for the common
development of the disabled and recommendable changes.
2. What problem areas that should be mostly targeted.
3. Identification of best possible Rehabilitation programs (for
Mentally retarded and other disabilities)
4. Needs and appropriateness of orthopedic appliances for the disabled and
how a better coordination could be developed among producers.
5. Most successful and appropriate income generating methods for the
disabled.
6. How should be the roll of DPOs* with GOs* and INGOs* to achieve
The common target.
7. Evaluation of training methods and strategies for rehabilitation workers
for the disabled persons in Sri Lanka.
8. Roll of media personal in integration of the disabled with the
community.
9. How we could integrate, trainers training programs related to
development of disabled within the other development programs in Sri Lanka.
10. How should be the attitudes and capabilities of the disabled themselves
for formation of an energetic National Body of the Disabled to coop with
the Government Programs?
(DPO* - Disabled Peoples Organizations.
GO* - Government Organization
INGO* - International Non Governmental Organization.)
