Dear List members:
Indeed, the Resurrection of Adam is a part of the Harrowing of Hell. It is
a Byzantine motif which found its way into the general western tradition
via the manuscript and mosaic interchanges. Perhaps the most comprehensive
treatment is Anna D Kartsonis, ANASTASIS: THE MAKING OF AN IMAGE
(Princeton:1986), ISBN-0-691-04039-7. She discusses the literary sources
of the Gospel of Nicodemus and other apocryphal books and the development
of the image.
Good luck,
Marian J Hollinger
