My name is Chris Swarat and I require some information regarding the
question of state formation in Russia. I am currently working on an
essay that has balloned into a much deeper research problem concerning
the nature of state formation in Russia. I have been quite influenced by
Perry Anderson's work on the Absolutist State but find his work to be
lacking, especially concerning the historically specific class relations
during the periods that he refers to; his assumptions concerning the
feudal mode of production and its place in Eastern European state
formation, etc.
That said, I was wondering if you might be able to point me towards some
sources that would do better than Anderson in explaining the rise of an
Absolutist State in Russia. I am primarily concerned with the period
from Petrine Russia to the collapse of Imperial Russia. If you could
give me any ideas or point me to any work which touches on this, I would
very much appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Chris Swarat
