We are looking for a reviewer for the new release of Diagnosys, version 3.02.
Anyone interested in evaluating this for the quarterly newsletter Maths&Stats is
invited to contact CTI Mathematics.

DIAGNOSYS is an expert-system testing shell suitable for diagnostic or other
testing of maths and related (hierarchical) subjects. Release 3 is a complete
rewrite for Windows 3.1 and later of the successful DIAGNOSYS v2.2 - v2.4.
A demonstration copy can be downloaded from
http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/john.appleby/diagpage/diagindx.htm.
This shows the whole test, but does not have post-processing facilities. The full
release includes these and also a customising editor to permit easy adaptation
of the various features to your needs.
Release 3 includes a range of 92 maths questions, and is suitable for Foundation
or 1st year entry to any course requiring numeracy and algebra skills. Other
developers have used the v2.4 shell to construct Mechanics and Computer
Science tests. It is in use in several dozen UK universities, and several overseas
universities and UK schools and colleges.
With the huge increase in student intake, a wider variety of mathematical
backgrounds has created a problem of identifying the weaker students who may
benefit from extra tuition. In many departments, paper based diagnostic tests
have been used to identify those students at risk. However, with the increasingly
large numbers of students it becomes impractical to give feedback on large
groups. The volumes of work involved with a paper based test also greatly
increase the difficulties in obtaining statistics on how the students coped with
their maths after the test (both those who did well and those given remedial
classes).
