I'm trying to repost, due to troubles with our server. I hope
this answers at least part of your query.
Hi, as a former instructor at SUSB, I am glad to hear that you are
thinking of a change.
At Loyola (a small liberal arts college with an intermediate-level requirement)
we meet three days a week for the first two years (the completion of which
meets the language requirement). The students are required to do an
hour of lab (tapes or videos, depending on the class) a week.
We use one textbook for three semesters, and the fourth semester is
a "capstone" so it varies depending upon the teacher. Essential, however,
are a grammar book and various readers. We have just switched to
_Prego!_ for the first three semesters; we have tried Oggi for four, but
there was not enough material for four semesters, and finishing in the
third is difficult-- so much is forgotten over the summer. We have just
this semester started with _Prego!_ so I cannot yet speak to whether this
is effective or not. They do like the fourth semester, as those who wish
to go on are prepared to read more, and those who will not (most, as we
have no major and no minor) can speak more and get to practice and review
oral materials.
I hope this is of interest. I would enjoy hearing more about grammar
books for the fourth semester. I have reviewed many and not liked any.
We are going back to Da Capo, and just doing selected bits; I wish there
were a shorter less technical grammar review we could use in one
semester, as there is in French, for example.
