Dear Readers,
I have a couple of queries, one on behalf of a colleague
elsewhere and one for my own benefit.
The first concerns the provenance of the following lines:
Tutta la gente in lieta fronte udiva
Le graziose e finte istorielle,
Ed i difetti altrui tosto scopriva
Ciascuno, e non i proprj espressi in quelle;
O se de' proprj sospettava, ignoti
Credeali a ciascun altro, e a se' sol noti.
The second concerns Bernardino Perfetti, who flourished
around 1700 and who, in his day, was famous as an
improviser of extemporaneous verse. He is mentioned (and
a sonnet cited) by Crescimbeni in the *Istoria della volgar
poesia*, but not by Muratori in his Trattato della perfetta
poesia italiana. Any other information, of whatever
substance, would be most welcome, especially if there is
anyone out there working on C18th popular culture...
Many thanks, in anticipation,
George
