BSRG / BGRG JOINT FIELD MEETING, ALMERIA PROVINCE, SE SPAIN
2nd-9th September 1999
You are invited to participate in this multidisiplinary 3rd
International Earth Science field conference in SE Spain.
AIM OF THE WEEK
The Almeria Province, and adjacent areas, have, over
the last decade, become the focus of a wide range of research and
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, particularly in the fields of
sedimentology, biogeography, geomorphology, environmental issues,
archaeology, tectonics, and remote sensing applications (including
several recent NERC Remote Sensing flights). The aim of the week is to
draw together this research, exchange information and ideas and
stimulate interdisciplinary discussion focused on the geographical
region. The support of both the British Sedimentological Research
Group (BSRG) and British Geomorphological Research Group (BGRG) for
the meeting highlights the interdisciplinary nature of this event. For
non-contributors, the meeting will offer new data for research, and
new possibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
programmes.
TIMING AND BACKGROUND TO THE MEETING
A field meeting will be held on the 2nd-9th September 1999 near Sorbas
in SE Spain. Similar meetings have been successfully held in 1994 and
1996, attracting UK & Spanish participants from a range of Earth
Science backgrounds. The timing of the meeting, from Thursday to
Thursday, will enable UK participants to take advantage of the cheap
charter flights to Almeria airport.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Papers for the field meeting will be in the form of excursions to the
Almeria and adjacent regions, which will be compiled into a refereed
field guide. These contributions will be presented as a series of half
and full day field excursions during the week. Participants in the
meeting will be able to select from a range of field excursions to
meet their specific interests. Submissions for the field guide must be
received by 31st March 1999. Details about manuscript format will be
posted on the conference website (address below).
COSTS
A registration fee of stlg45(sterling) will be charged to cover the
costs of a field guide, reception and administration. As a
geographical focus, the meeting will be held at the Cortijo Urra field
centre near the village of Sorbas, from where most excursions will
begin. Transport to and within Spain, accommodation and food will be
covered by the individual. Booking information on car hire, flights
and accommodation will be advertised shortly through this web page.
