Program (HUAP), University of Hawai`i
February 1 & 2, 1999
Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, Honolulu, Hawai`i

6th International Conference on Mental Retardation & Other
Developmental Disabilities Council for Exceptional Children,
Division of MRDD (CEC-MRDD) February 3 - 6, 1999 Aston Wailea

During the first week of February, two International
Conferences are being planned in the beautiful Hawaiian Islands
to provide attendees and presenters the opportunity to
participate in jointly planned and coordinated activities.
Pre-registration materials and workshop proposals submitted for
presentation will be coordinated across the two conferences. A
discounted registration fee, collaborative activities and events
will be provided to those participating in both conferences.

February 1 & 2 15th Annual Pacific Rim Conference on Disabilities
Sheraton Waikiki Beach Hotel Honolulu, Hawai i
The Pacific Rim Conference was first held in 1984 in an
effort to engage interested persons in dialogue about persons
with disabilities. In the early years the conference was
primarily attended by Hawai`i residents with an emphasis on
special education programming and secondary transition. Since
then, the conference has grown in size and scope, and now draws
hundreds of people from the U.S. mainland and Alaska; Pacific
Island jurisdictions including the Republic of the Marshall
Islands, Federated States of Micronesia; and numerous foreign
countries.
The Pacific Rim conference attracts nationally and
internationally recognized persons in disability studies and the
field of developmental disabilities as keynote speakers and
presenters. Sessions encourage interaction with under-served
rural regions, under-represented cultural groups, and
under-served disability groups. The conference program also
promotes and supports the participation of persons with
disabilities, family members, community leaders, and other
citizens who advocate for the full community inclusion and
participation of persons with disabilities.

Theme: Creating the Future for Individuals with Disabilities
in the New Millennium
Invited Keynote Speakers: Judith Heumann, Assistant
Secretary United States Department of Education, Office of
Special Education & Rehabilitation Services; Reginald Wells,
Interim Commissioner, United States Department of Health & Human
Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities
and Other International and National Speakers

February 3-6 6th Annual InternationalConference on Mental
Retardation and other Developmental Disabilities Aston Wailea
Resort Island of Maui, Hawai i

The Council for Exceptional Children s Division on Mental
Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MRDD) Conference in
Maui in February 1999 marks the sixth conference sponsored by the
division and the third conference in Hawai`i. MRDD s first
conference, held in January 1988 in Honolulu, was initiated to
give professionals working in fields related to mental
retardation and developmental disabilities the opportunity and
avenue to collaborate on ideas, research and best practices. The
third MRDD conference in January 1992, also in Honolulu, was in
conjunction with the Pac Rim conference. Collaborating this year
once again with the Pacific Rim Conference continues the
tradition and expands the wealth of knowledge and opportunity for
those serving individuals with mental retardation and other
developmental disabilities.

Research to Practice in the 21st Century
Keynote Speakers:
Ann and Rutherford Turnbull, University of Kansas
Eugene Edgaron, University of Washington
Anne Donnellan, University of Wisconson

The Council for Exceptional Children s Division on Mental
Retardation and other Developmental Disabilities (CEC-MRDD) Sixth
International Conference in Maui gives researchers and educators
the opportunity to explore current research, topical issues and
best practices relating to mental retardation and other
developmental disabilities, as we move into the 21st century.
Registration begins Wednesday, February 3 at 5:00 pm. This day
allows PacRim participants time to travel to Maui ( a 20 minute
flight) and enjoy a leisurely afternoon touring the island after
their arrival. A wide variety of extracurricula activities will
be offered to participants (whale-watching, snorkeling, etc.)

Wednesday, February 3 activities begins with registration,
followed by the opening session with the first keynote speaker
and an evening social.

Thursday and Friday, February 4 & 5 conference days will begin
with keynote speakers followed by breakout sessions until mid
afternoon. A variety of formats from lecture, panel sessions,
round table discussion and poster sessions are planned for the
breakout sessions. Late afternoons will be a time for site
visits, excursions, and recreation. Thursday evening, conference
attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a poster
session/reception, as well as an authentic Hawaiian luau on
Friday evening.

Saturday, February 6 the morning conference will conclude with an
informal breakfast/round table session with the conference
keynote or session speakers. Conference attendants will be asked
to discuss issues and topics with conference presenters in an
informal relaxed setting. Island tours and excursions can be
arranged for those who stay longer on Maui.
