The life Jacobus relates matches that of Moses the Black (c. 330-c.
405). According to D. Attawater's old Penguin "Dictionary of Saints,"
Moses was an Egyptian servant dismissed for pilfering. He then "put
himself at the head of a gang of robbers," but later converted and joined
other desert monks at Sketis. He was killed refusing to defend himself
from Berbers attacking his monastery. According to Attwater, monks
"still live at the monastery where St. Moses was buried, Dair al-Baramus
in the Wadi Natrun." Feast day: Aug. 28.
