Vulgates are not easy to come by; the current critical edition, as you
know, is very expensive, even secondhand. There are a few printed editions
-- most notably from the Amer. Bible Society in New York. But if you're
looking for something on a student budget, try calling Ex Libris
Theological Books in Chicago, (773) 955-3456. They often have used ones in
stock for reasonable (though not bargain-basement) prices.
This may be no help, but there are several places on the Web where you can
gain access to the Vulgate electronically. Try www.lib.uchicago.edu and
follow the links through electronic texts. You'll find several options
there. Or try www.newadvent.org, a conservative Catholic site that has
Aquinas's whole Summa in translation, the 1915 (?) edition of the Catholic
encyclopedia and, I think, the Vulgate. Or J. J. O'Donnell's magnificent
page at U.Penn. also has links to the Latin Vulgate. The electronic Vulgate
doesn't make for good reading in the garden under the apple tree, but it
can be a helpful scholarly tool.
If you're really enterprising and willing to dig a little, you can try
calling around to Roman Catholic seminaries -- sometimes they have boxes of
that sort of thing sitting around that they don't know what to do with, and
haven't yet figured out that they can make a pile of money selling them to
Ex Libris.
Alternatively, and this may really be a long-shot, the Society of St. Pius
X (Abp. LeFevre's "traditionalist" group) has a seminary in Northern Ky
(are you in the States?). If you can dig up the phone number on the Web,
call them up -- they might well know where to get a Vulgate. It won't be
the critical edition, but they have a vested interest in finding Vulgates,
and I'm sure they know where to look, or even may know of somebody who's
still printing them.
Hope one of these wild ideas helps.
