The Sedimentary Systems Research Group at the University of St Andrews is
inviting applications for a Ph.D. studentship. The deadline for
applications is 21st September. Address and contact numbers for
applications are listed below.
St Andrews University Sedimentary Systems Research Group
and
Amerada Hess Limited Industry Research Studentship
An industrially sponsored Ph.D. research studentship is being offered by
SSRG, St Andrews University, commencing in January 1999.
Objective: to produce a revised tectonostratigraphic model of the
Carboniferous sequences in the Outer Moray Firth and to identify new
fairways for future exploitation. A phased programme will be followed with
an initial data synthesis stage incorporating all existing well control
north of the Mid North Sea High with detailed analysis of core, regional 2D
seismic data and a mapped transect of the equivalent geologic section
exposed on the Fife coast. The fieldwork will also incorporate geophysical
and geochemical logging and analysis. A second phase will involve detailed
mapping of pre-Permian structure in the vicinity of key wells where seismic
resolution is high and 3D data are available. The results of this programme
will be integrated with production data for ranking of undrilled locations.
Logistics: The research programme will be based in St Andrews. However,
significant time will be spent with the sponsor company based in their
London office. Candidates should have strong field skills and a general
petroleum geology background together with familiarity of wireline logs and
seismic workstation data. The studentship will cover an annual living
allowance equivalent to that offered by NERC (with London weighting when
appropriate), EC fees for 3 years and field/travel expenses. The award will
be made pending final funding approval from the sponsor company.
Contact Details: Further information can be obtained from Drs. Tony Prave,
Richard Bates, Ruth Robinson or Ian Alsop (tel: 01334 463934) and
applications should be sent by 21 September 1998, together with c.v. and
the names of two
academic referees, to Linda Young, School of Geography & Geosciences,
University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Fife, KY16 9ST.
