PhD Bursary and Scholarship
One University-funded bursary and one fees-only scholarship have
become available because of the department's recent success in
obtaining two ESRC studentships. The Bursary covers the cost of fees,
research expenses, and maintenance (currently at £6000 with an
additional supplement of £1000 for students over 25). The scholarship
covers the cost of tuition fees for UK/EU students, but does not cover
living costs. Research supervision is available in the following
areas:
Dr. Alan Costall (01705 846313, [log in to unmask]) Ecological
psychology, including the perception of actions and events; pictorial
representation, affordances.
Dr. Darren Van Laar (01705 846306, [log in to unmask]) Human
factors of colour use on computer displays, including colour naming,

Dr. Aldert Vrij (01705 846319, [log in to unmask]) The design of
public campaigns to reduce ethnic prejudice, drawing upon social
psychological and mass media theories.
Applications should be submitted on the official postgraduate
application form, along with a brief c.v. and covering letter giving
the names of two referees. Applicants should specify their choice of
topic, and discuss their proposal with the relevant supervisor, before
