We are using Dublin Core elements to create header/meta data for journal
articles in a project concerned with making archived issues of a journal
available electronically.
We have defined <SOURCE> to have an 'internal' scheme, which includes the
elements:
<JTL>journal title
<VID>volume
<IID>issue
<PPF>first page
<PPL>last page
It seems to me that this is all necessary information (except perhaps <PPL>)
for defining a journal article. When it comes to syntax, it is not obvious
how to define this in HTML <META> tags (in fact I've resorted to a simple
text string). But RDF allows private schemas to be defined.
We have also used SICI as an <IDENTIFIER>. SICI is an 'intelligent' number
which means it can be made up in retrospect. But I think it appplies only to
Serials. In its simplest form it doesn't include page number. Though there
may be later versions of SICI where page number (and lots more) can be added.
The lack of an obvious place to include Version number, and also change history
information, has concerned me for a while. Keeping track of versions of
documents is a 'pain' but it is important in some contexts.
